That's why we're creating this role. We need someone who has already lived through the process of bringing AI from idea to production. Someone who can step in, make decisions, and help us expand into agentic workflows, personalized AI experiences, and a new product direction – without spending six months figuring out the setup.

What you'll actually be doing

This is not an AI research role. You won't be building LLMs. You'll be building on them – and that distinction matters a lot to us.

In this role, you'll own the AI architecture layer at Refined. That means:

• Defining how we build AI features – setting patterns and architectural principles that other engineers can follow, not just implementing features yourself.

• Building and expanding AI capabilities in production – RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, tool use, prompt engineering, lightweight evals.

• Working across our AWS infrastructure (Lambda, ECS, RDS) using Claude via AWS Bedrock, with a Node.js and Vue/React stack – fluency in this environment is a must.

• Collaborating cross-team with engineers, product managers, and the CTO to translate the AI product vision into concrete, shippable work.

• Helping reimagine how people interact with our product – not AI for the sake of it, but meaningful features that change what's possible for our customers.

You'll be part of a team that moves fluidly – sometimes working in short-lived projects around specific problems, sometimes leading broader initiatives. Ownership here is real, and decisions you make will have a direct impact on how 5,000+ customers experience Refined.

You'll thrive here if you are

• A software engineer at heart. You're a builder who happens to have deep AI expertise – not an AI specialist who codes on the side. You think in systems, you care about production quality, and you're comfortable making architectural decisions and being accountable for them.

• Someone with real production AI experience. You've worked in product-facing teams, shipping to real users rather than only prototyping. You've dealt with the messy reality of running AI in production, not just the clean version in demos.

• Comfortable in AWS. We run deep on AWS, and you need to hit the ground running. You've run production workloads in serverless and container environments. AWS Bedrock experience is a bonus; broader AWS fluency is a must.

• Low ego, high ownership. Refined is a place where people notice things are broken and fix them – even when it's outside their lane. No one's worrying about stepping on toes here. If that sounds like how you like to work, you'll fit right in.

• Curious and decisive. Architectural decisions don't always have a perfect answer, but they do need to be reasonable and made. You're someone who can hold complexity, make a call, and move forward.

• A clear communicator. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics to non-technical stakeholders.

What success looks like

• In 3 months: You understand our AI stack and architecture, have made your first meaningful contributions, and have started shaping how we approach AI development as a team.

• In 6 months: You own key AI initiatives end-to-end. You're the person others come to when they're making AI-related technical decisions.

• In 12 months: You've helped transform how users interact with Refined. AI capabilities that existed only as a vision on a roadmap are now running in production, at scale, because you helped to make them real.

Refined is a 70-person SaaS company founded in Malmö in 2009, with engineering hubs in Helsinki and Malmö and teammates across Europe and beyond. We represent 30+ nationalities.

You'll work closely with product managers, engineering managers, and other staff engineers across the organization - collaborating across team boundaries as the go-to AI engineering voice.
